APRIL 2006 SAFETY TIP

By Don Coons

Spring is here with better weather to follow soon. Everyone starts to get excited this time of year with all the planning for upcoming rides and events. Soon we'll receive the hot weather and everyone, being ice cream nuts, will be looking for the nearest DQ's.

Those DQ's, after a ride, are great but beware..they are not a good idea in the middle of a hot day on the desert. Milk shakes and or ice cream will sour on your tummy and you won't be a happy rider. Lots of water is the best idea during the day and not just while on the desert.

At higher altitudes your lungs work harder to breath and you can become dehydrated. This I learned from experience. At the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs the recruits are required to drink an issued amount of water daily.

Also, while riding, the wind will cause dehydration so don't forget that bottle of water at each rest/gas stop and save the DQ for evening relaxation.

Here's wishing everyone a safe riding season along with lots of exciting events.
