How To Raise Your Fallen Wing
First, don’t get upset if you drop your bike; that’s why Honda puts safety bars on it
. Be sure you’re safe from traffic and unhurt. Take a deep breath and assess the situation. Why did it fall over? Is the footing secure? Are you in condition to upright it yourself? If the bike is heavily laden, take some of the gear out of the rear trunk and saddlebags. An unloaded Wing is somewhat easier to lift.
1. Be sure the bike’s engine is stopped, then pull up on the reverse lever (if your Wing has reverse). If not, firmly engage the gears to prevent the bike from rolling while it’s lifted.
2. With your back to the bike, pull the left handlebar to your body with your right hand grasping the hand grip.
3. Grasp the rear seat hand rail with your left hand.
4. Position yourself at a 90-degree angle to the seat with your hips against the seat itself. Later model Gold Wing seats have a recessed lip that will hold your rear in the seated position.
5. IMPORTANT! Place your feet about shoulder width and cock your knees slightly. Don’t crouch as if you intend to squat-lift the motorcycle up. Your back should not be bent at all. The bike is raised by a pushing motion by your leg muscles and your hips—not a lifting effort. The effect is like pushing a heavy appliance into position against a wall.
6. Shuffle backwards and upward with your legs. Don’t even pick your feet up off the ground—just shuffle them backwards a couple of inches at a time and push with your hips. As you do, the bike will start to rise. Take your time!
7.
When the bike is almost upright, using your right foot, lower the sidestand fully and settle the bike’s weight onto it.8. Step away from the bike—it will stay upright.
If the bike has fallen on its right side, use the same procedure, but first put the sidestand in its fully lowered position before you start to lift it
or it will flop over on its opposite side. You’ll be surprised how easily your Wing seems to upright itself!WARNING:
Do not attempt to lift a Gold Wing or any other heavy weight if you have a known back weakness or injury! GWTA and American Honda accept no responsibility for injury incurred.
