OCTOBER 07 SAFETY TIP
Wow! Where did the summer go? It was a busy but enjoyable summer and now we have to be on guard for that First Rain of the season. We did have a light sprinkle one day last month and the roads were really slick. That was just a warning of what’s yet to come. Many of us like to ride all year long and those rainstorms can sneak up on you. It will start out with a beautiful sunshine morning and sucker you into a nice ride only to cloud up in the afternoon and rain all over you.
Slow down and be extra cautious during those first rains. Even on a trike they can be dangerous. When you’re slipping and sliding through an intersection you’re out of control. Even during that light sprinkle we had last month, my pickup was breaking traction. That was just a wake-up call.
Now is a good time to check those tires for wear and proper air pressure and don’t forget that rain gear.
I’m crowding in as much ride time as I can before winter but Judy and I have learned, in the short time we’ve been in Oregon, that "not normal" is normal so expect the unexpected.
I’m sure there are lots of winter activities planned that will include chapter social events so check your chapter calendar often and plan on joining in on all the fun. We still have Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Birthdays, Anniversaries and whatever other excuse for a party. One thing I’ve learned is that everyone shows up for food and or ice cream.
Don’t forget the SRC training at KCK’s Shop in Grants Pass on 6 October at 10:00. Contact me for more info: 582-1403. Or see the Web Page http://www.gwta-oregon.org/A.htm . All GWTA members welcome.
