OCTOBER 2006 SAFETY SUGGESTION

By Don Coons

Hello again. Winter will be fast upon us and I'm just wondering how many members will be guilty of PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome)?

If you plan to ride or not, now is the time to check and recheck all of the safety equipment on your trusty steed.

I was recently surprised while riding in a light parade. We were all asked to turn on our 4-ways (emergency flashers) and mine stuck. As hard as I tried I couldn't get it to turn off and I was afraid I would have to pull the fuse in order to continue to ride. As luck would have it, and only after a million and one tries the switch did finally disengage.

Radio Shack and other electronics stores sell "Contact Cleaner/Lubricant". While holding a rag beneath the switch give a little squirt along all four sides of the push button and then work it on and off several times. This will clean the contacts and lubricate the switch mechanism. This is especially important for those seldom used switches that don't normally get exercised. Do you usually just leave your CB on channel one? Do you normally just listen and very seldom talk? Those switches also require cleaning and lubrication. To be safe, it's a good idea to just spray all of the switches to lubricate and clean them. This should be done to all of those bikes that will be stored for the winter and then again just before thawing them out for the summer fun.

Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable winter riding season. Judy and I have really enjoyed all the new friends we've made here in Oregon and look forward to many more exciting rides although we may make a few more coffee stops and less DQ stops through the cold months.

REMEMBER: A good ride is when you arrive to your destination safely.
