Wow! Here it is July already and many of us are making plans for a trip to Sioux Falls, S.D. to attend Gold Rush XX and possibly win a brand new Gold Wing. Of course I want to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable trip and don't forget to expect the unexpected.
I always watch for deer and other wild life and yesterday a Doe ran out in front of me while riding my 85 LTD. I was prepared for just such an event and had no problem locking up the brakes to avoid the Doe but what really worried me most was the truck behind me. Luckily, he saw my break lights or the Doe and also was able to stop. Another time and another place I might not have been so lucky.
I always worried about being able to avoid a deer but never considered the traffic following behind me. Now I have something else to think about.
If you have a person tailgating it is very important to pull over and let them pass. Road rage is not good for your blood pressure and you don't stand a chance against a car or truck.
At a stoplight be extra alert if a diesel truck pulls up behind you. If he forgets you're there, when the light turns green, and your bike dies for some reason he could run right over you.
This is a time of year for all sorts of outdoor activities and most people over-do it and then get behind the wheel extra tired and not paying attention.
