Terrell.jpg 2005 - Jim Terrell - Chapter A - To understand Jim and why he was chosen as Good Samaritan of the Year, you should know the history of GWTA in Oregon.  Jim took over the job of State Treasurer when Steve Coker was State Director.  The previous state director had embezzled money from the state and GWTA was going to be sued because creditors could not be paid.  Jim, Marty, and Steve delved into their own money to keep the state afloat as best they could.  Washington State GWTA then loaned Oregon $3,000 and Steve and Jim began fundraisers.  First a state Rally that raised $1,000, followed by yard sales, white elephant sales and 50/50s.  Washington was paid back and Oregon’s account was built up with a surplus.  It is well known if anyone asked Jim for state money his answer was always, “NO!”  He was cautious with state funds and never wanted Oregon to be in such a situation again.

Jim loved GWTA and all the members loved Jim.  He was outspoken, he had a wonderful dry sense of humor and was not above playing jokes on those he knew would appreciate a good laugh.  He would do anything for anyone. Jim and Marty’s home was always open for potlucks, meetings, and whenever needed.

Jim holds a special place in all our hearts for his dedication to GWTA and his friendship.  The “Jim Terrell Memorial Good Samaritan Award” is aptly named, for without Jim there would probably not be a GWTA in Oregon.
